Well done to PJ Teahan and the World Fiddle Day Scartaglin for providing an amazing day of video content for the their 2021 online festival. A mammoth effort was made to put together all the videos sent from around the globe. The highlight of the day’s entertainment was a video called Insights – The Sliabh Luachra Fiddle Tradition. It’s over three hours and full of very special contributions.

On Saturday 20th of March at 8pm we will bring you the third instalment in the new video series celebrating Sliabh Luachra music. It’s made thanks to funding from Cork, Kerry and Limerick County Councils with support from the Arts Council and Creative Ireland.
In this one we launch a new album by Maura O’Connor, a brilliant young musician from Abbeyfeale. We’ll also talk to the people behind the rushymountain.com and we take a look at an album of Sliabh Luachra music from Michael Sheehy that came out in 2016. There’ll be young musicians, some bits from episode one and two and a preview of the Maurice O’Keeffe Festival. It’s going to be great.

In collaboration with the Handed Down in Scartaglin we had the presentation of the 2020 Dan Connell Award. We had great young musicians picking out tunes from the new Sliabh Luachra music archive at worldfiddledayscartaglin.ie and we’ll talked with PJ Teahan and Raymond O’Sullivan about the work in putting together that archive.

It’s so sad to hear of the passing of Paddy Jones. In 2019 we helped release a series of videos from an interview with Paddy in late 2018. He was in brilliant form and his great insight into the music of Sliabh Luachra, learning from Padraig O’Keeffe and just general talk about the soul of all music was heart warming and inspiring. We really hoped this was just to be the first of many times we’d get to work with Paddy.
Most musicians shy away from talking about the magic behind the ABCs but Paddy loved to discuss it. He seemed to have an intimate relationship with the music and seeing and hearing him bring out a tune was a real enchanting experience. Instead of teasing the music from his fiddle it seemed to weave it around him. And all the time Paddy would be grunting and muttering as if instructing invisible forces. He really was special. Rest in peace Paddy 🙂
World Fiddle Day Scartaglin ran a virtual concert on their website and social media platforms to compensate for the fact that the usual celebration had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
While it’s sad that we couldn’t make it to Scartaglin everyone will agree that this video concert really shows off the fine fiddle playing from Sliabh Luachra and it’s fans around the world.
Thanks to everyone involved.
